Gender- and diversity-sensitive medicine and research – a guide
What does equal opportunity have to do with excellent research? Taking into account factors such as sex/gender, age, social differences, language proficiency, etc. as influencing factors in medicine and access to medicine leads to more precise and targeted results and thus to improved health solutions for patients.
The guide provides insight into how these aspects can be integrated into research projects.

New ERC eligibility rules in 2027
ERC President Maria Leptin explains (https://erc.europa.eu/news-events/news/erc-president-explains-stricter-application-measures-amid-rising-demand-funding) stricter application measures amid rising demand for funding. The ERC will launch a new round of grant competitions from July 2026 to June 2027, with changes to eligibility rules.
Background
91 panels meet twice yearly—first to shortlist, then to interview and rank proposals.
Panels efficiently handled 50–150 proposals; now some panels face 250+ applications, a trend expected to continue.
Process improvements to streamline evaluation have been made, but reviewer burden remains high.
Soft measures (encouraging applicants to apply at the right time with mature proposals) had limited impact.
Key changes
Extend existing resubmission restrictions by one year; adopted after extensive discussion and lack of viable alternatives.
Immediate impact: changes will affect 2027 call applicants who were unsuccessful in previous calls.
Possible future impact: similar restrictions may be imposed for 2028 and 2029, which would exclude unsuccessful 2027 applicants from those calls.
Advice to applicants: carefully assess whether 2027 is the optimal time to apply; postponing to further mature the proposal may improve funding chances.
