AI and ChatGPT in Higher Education Teaching

Easy access to artificial intelligence (AI) presents both opportunities and challenges in higher education teaching. Foremost among these are issues around the independence of academic work and the assessment of examinations. The Medical University of Innsbruck is aware of the rapid developments in digitalisation and new technologies and seeks to engage with both lecturers and students on the implications of AI‑based technologies for study and teaching. As a starting point, an event on “Artificial Intelligence and ChatGPT: possibilities and limitations in higher education teaching” took place in May 2023.

Currently, the best‑known AI application is ChatGPT by the US company OpenAI. Below, this page provides a selection of resources for dealing with AI in teaching, particularly around the use of ChatGPT. The Guideline on the use of AI systems in teaching and examinations at the Medical University of Innsbruck offers recommendations for working with AI applications, especially ChatGPT.

Resource collection

The Hamburg Centre for University Teaching and Learning provides a collection of materials on the language model ChatGPT. In particular, the overview of ChatGPT in the context of higher education teaching offers basic explanations and ideas for using ChatGPT in teaching and assessment.
